Things to do in Dubai

Dubai's single most memorable experience. An afternoon in the red dunes east of the city — 4WD dune bashing, a sunset over the sand, camel rides, falconry, and a Bedouin camp dinner under the stars. Even the budget versions deliver. The overnight version is special. Book directly with operators for better prices.

The world's tallest building at 828m. Level 124 and 125 give you an outdoor terrace and glass-enclosed observation decks. The view of the city against the desert is extraordinary. Book online in advance (cheaper and you choose your time slot). Go at sunset for the transition from day to golden hour to city lights.

The Dubai Fountain is the easiest free spectacle to add to a Downtown evening. The current Dubai Mall schedule lists shows every 30 minutes from 6pm to 11:30pm, but check the live schedule around maintenance or special events. The public waterfront view costs nothing, and the combination of water, music, light and Burj Khalifa behind it gives you a strong evening without adding another major ticket.

Make Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood and the Creek the anchors, not a museum ticket. Walk the shaded lanes, cross the Creek by abra and continue into Deira's souqs for a half-day that shows how trading, migration and the waterfront shaped Dubai. Al Fahidi Fort, home of Dubai Museum, has been undergoing rehabilitation; Dubai's February 2026 project update described the work as being in its final phase ahead of reopening. Kite Beach is one of the easiest public-beach choices to combine with a city day: open shoreline, food and activity options, and a clear Burj Al Arab sightline without paying for resort access. It feels less enclosed than a beach club and is better suited to travellers who want a flexible swim-and-walk stop. Conditions, facilities and parking demand change through the day, so treat the beach as free-entry public space rather than assuming a particular parking spot or perfectly calm water.

A 1km zipline above the Dubai Marina at 170m height — launching from the Amwaj Tower and landing near the Marina Walk. Offers a completely unique bird's-eye perspective of one of the world's most dramatic urban skylines. Runs in daylight and at night; the nighttime experience (lights, boats, towers around you) is exceptional.

Alserkal Avenue is the strongest counterpoint to the glass-tower version of Dubai: warehouses repurposed for galleries, design, independent food, Cinema Akil and performance spaces. Many gallery visits are free, while screenings, performances and special programmes may be ticketed. Do not plan around an old assumption that Thursday is automatically 'opening night'; check Alserkal's live programme and build the visit around the exhibitions or events actually running.

A full-size indoor ski slope inside Mall of the Emirates, operating at -1°C year-round while it's 40°C outside. Five runs, a snow park, a chair lift, and resident penguins. Absurd by any rational measure, and completely enjoyable. Great for families; genuinely fun for adults too. Rental gear included in the ticket.

One of the top waterparks in the world — the Leap of Faith near-vertical slide, the Tower of Neptune, a lazy river through the resort, and a private beach included. Best visited midweek to avoid weekend queues. The price is steep but it's genuinely an all-day experience, and the setting (on the Palm, looking back at the Dubai skyline) is unlike anywhere else.

Decide first whether you want to go inside or simply see the building well. Jumeirah currently promotes afternoon-tea experiences at Burj Al Arab, including Skyview Lounge, but menus, packages and access conditions change, so book the exact current experience rather than relying on an old minimum-spend figure. For the exterior, use a genuine public viewpoint such as Kite Beach instead of assuming a neighbouring resort's beach is public. Sunset is excellent, but the free view and the paid hotel experience are two different outings.
