Is Dubai expensive?
Dubai is expensive compared to Southeast Asia or Eastern Europe. It is broadly comparable to London or Paris for food and transport, and cheaper than both for hotels in mid-tier categories. The city has a well-earned reputation for luxury excess — but that is a choice, not a requirement. A visitor who eats at local restaurants, uses the Metro, and picks mid-range hotels will spend less per day in Dubai than in many European capitals.
The key variable is hotels. Five-star hotels in Dubai in peak season (December–March) are genuinely expensive — 1,500–3,000 AED per night for well-regarded properties. Three and four-star hotels in the same period are 400–800 AED — very reasonable for the quality. In summer (June–August) those five-star properties drop to 600–1,000 AED — genuinely good value.
Everything else is broadly comparable to major Western cities: restaurant meals cost what you'd expect, taxis are reasonably priced, attractions have clear price structures. The shock for most visitors is that alcohol is expensive — a beer at a licensed bar runs 40–65 AED (roughly £10–16). Budget for this if drinking is part of your visit.

Visit in shoulder or summer season
April, May, October and November give you most of the December experience at 30–50% lower hotel rates. June–August is extreme heat but 5-star hotels at 3-star prices — if you're happy to be indoors most of the day, this is the best value window in the year.
Use the Metro as much as possible
The Red Line covers most tourist areas: airport → Downtown → Mall of the Emirates → Marina. A Nol card costs 25 AED (including 19 AED credit). Metro fares are 5–8 AED. The same journey by taxi is 40–70 AED. Over five days, this difference is significant.
Eat where residents eat
Dubai has an extraordinary range of affordable food — Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Lebanese, and Sri Lankan restaurants serving superb food for 25–60 AED per person are everywhere in Karama, Al Quoz, Deira, and Bur Dubai. These are not tourist-facing restaurants; they are where the city's large expat workforce eats daily, and the quality is exceptional. A shawarma from a good Deira stall beats a mediocre hotel restaurant meal at ten times the price.
Supermarket alcohol
Alcohol from licensed hotel bars costs 40–65 AED per drink. Pre-dinner drinks in your hotel room from the minibar or brought from a hotel shop saves meaningfully over a week. Note: visitors cannot purchase from standalone off-licences (MMI, African & Eastern) — these require UAE resident licences. Hotel shops and minibars are the options available to tourists.
Book Burj Khalifa online
Walk-up tickets at the Burj Khalifa cost significantly more than online prices. Book 2–3 days ahead online at burjkhalifa.ae even if not the sunset slot — the saving is 50–80 AED per person.
