§ 01 — Location

Which area should you stay in?

This is the most important decision — Dubai's districts have completely different characters, and you'll save hours of transfers if you pick right.

D-01 · Downtown

Downtown & DIFC

Best all-round base. Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall and the Fountain on your doorstep. Metro access. Mid-range to ultra-luxury. Can feel corporate at night.

Dubai Marina & JBR

Great for beach and nightlife. The Marina Walk is one of the best promenades in the city. JBR Beach is steps away. Slightly removed from Old Dubai.

Deira & Bur Dubai

Most affordable area. Authentic Dubai feel — the Creek, souks, amazing street food. Fewer luxury hotels but excellent budget and mid-range options.

Palm Jumeirah

Isolated luxury. Amazing if you're splurging on a resort week — private beaches, Atlantis, One&Only. But you'll need transport for everything else.

Jumeirah Beach Road

Classic beach strip with iconic hotels (Burj Al Arab, Jumeirah Beach Hotel). Residential feel. No Metro — you'll rely on taxis. Worth it for the Burj Al Arab experience.

D-06 · Desert

Al Marmoom / Desert

For 1–2 nights in a desert camp — a completely different Dubai. Stars, camels, silence. Best booked as an add-on to a city stay, not a base.

Best for experience 1–2 nights Stargazing

Our default recommendation: First-time visitors — stay Downtown or Marina. If it's a luxury week with beach focus — Palm Jumeirah. Budget travellers — Bur Dubai or Deira give you far more for your money with surprisingly good access to the rest of the city.

Hostels

Backpacker dorms

Several licensed hostels operate in Dubai — mostly in Deira and Bur Dubai. Expect clean, air-conditioned dorms from 60–100 AED/night. Dubai Youth Hostel in Al Nahda is a reliable, affordable option with a pool.

Serviced apartments

For stays of 5+ nights, a serviced apartment often beats a hotel on value — full kitchen, living room, laundry. Strong supply in JLT, Business Bay and Silicon Oasis. Airbnb is legal and widely used in Dubai.

Overnight dune camps

Budget overnight camps in the desert range from basic tents with shared facilities to premium glamping setups. Most include dinner, breakfast, camel riding and entertainment. A uniquely Dubai experience at accessible price points.

Summer discount season

May–September is brutal for outdoor activities but hotel rates drop 30–50%. If your trip is mostly indoor attractions (malls, museums, indoor ski slope), you can stay at 5-star hotels for mid-range prices. The Hilton Dubai Creek in summer can be 400 AED/night.

Hotel booking tips

Things we've learned the hard way.

Book directly for the best rate

Dubai's luxury hotels frequently beat OTA prices on their own websites, especially if you call. Ask for the "best available rate" and mention you're flexible on dates — they often move.

Peak = Nov–Mar, expect premium prices

November to March is when Dubai is at its best — and most expensive. Book 3–4 months ahead for Palm Jumeirah resorts and anything near Burj Khalifa during New Year's Eve (prices triple).

Breakfast inclusion matters

Hotel breakfast in Dubai is often a genuine all-you-can-eat spread at 5-star level. At 80–120 AED per person add-on, it's worth factoring into total cost — especially at places like Atlantis where the spread is extraordinary.

Check the transport situation

A hotel 200 AED/night cheaper that requires a 40 AED taxi every time you leave can cost more over a week than a pricier central hotel. Metro-connected hotels save real money on a longer stay.

Higher floors are free to request

Check-in staff in Dubai are generally generous with upgrades and room location requests, especially for polite, friendly guests. Ask for a high floor — most towers have 40+ floors and the views matter enormously.

Pool vs beach — know the difference

Most Downtown and DIFC hotels have pools but no beach access. "Beach hotel" in Dubai should mean private beach — check carefully. Palm and Jumeirah hotels genuinely deliver beach access; others require a beach club day pass (200–500 AED).
