Jumeirah — the original beach strip

Jumeirah Beach Road stretches south from the city centre along the Gulf coast — a sequence of residential villas, boutique restaurants, beach access points and two of Dubai's most iconic hotels. The area predates Dubai Marina and Downtown as the city's premium address, and still carries a quieter, more residential character than those newer districts.

The Burj Al Arab stands on its own artificial island off Umm Suqeim beach — connected to the mainland by a private causeway. Its sail shape is the most recognised silhouette in Dubai and one of the most photographed buildings on earth. Most visitors never go inside (entry requires a dining reservation or a hotel stay), but the exterior view from Kite Beach or the Jumeirah Beach Hotel's stretch is free and extraordinary.

Kite Beach is Dubai's most authentic free public beach — popular with residents, well-maintained, with food trucks, a skate park, kite surfing, beach volleyball and the Burj Al Arab in your eyeline. Go before 10am in peak season. La Mer is a more developed beach retail and food district further north — good for a late afternoon, less good if you want calm water and space.

Jumeirah cafés
The best specialty coffee and brunch café scene in Dubai is concentrated in Jumeirah's villa strips. Comptoir 102 is the resident favourite.

Burj Al Arab access without a stay: Book Skyview Bar or Sal restaurant — minimum spend applies (approx 400 AED per person at Skyview). Or book afternoon tea. You'll be escorted through security and into the atrium. Worth doing once. Check the Burj Al Arab website for current minimum spends as these change.
