Downtown Dubai

The city's iconic centrepiece — Burj Khalifa, the Dubai Fountain, Dubai Mall and the Opera District. The most visited square kilometre in the Middle East.

Downtown Dubai — what it actually is

Downtown Dubai is a purpose-built 2km² district constructed entirely from scratch between 2004 and 2010. It is anchored by the Burj Khalifa — at 828m still the world's tallest building — and surrounds the 12km² Burj Lake, around which the Dubai Fountain performs nightly. The Dubai Mall, one of the world's largest shopping centres by total area, sits at the base of the Burj Khalifa and connects directly to it via a sky bridge.

Downtown is where most first-time visitors spend their first evening in Dubai — and with good reason. The combination of the Fountain, the Burj Khalifa lit up at night, and the density of restaurants along Souk Al Bahar is one of the genuinely impressive urban experiences in the world. It's also tourist-heavy, overpriced for food and drink, and impossible to walk out of without planning (the distances between points are deceptive).

DIFC (Dubai International Financial Centre) sits immediately to the north — a separate legal jurisdiction with its own courts, company registration and regulatory framework. It houses most of the city's investment banks, hedge funds, law firms and insurance companies — plus some of the best restaurants and most serious contemporary art galleries in Dubai. The Gate building at its centre is an instantly recognisable landmark.

Getting there & around

By Metro

The Burj Khalifa / Dubai Mall station on the Red Line is the gateway. It's a 10-minute walk from the station to the mall entrance via a covered, air-conditioned walkway — use it. Taxis from the Metro are not necessary for most Downtown attractions.

Within Downtown

Downtown looks walkable on a map but distances are greater than they appear. The Fountain boardwalk to the Dubai Mall entrance is 10 minutes. Souk Al Bahar is a short walk from the Mall. The Opera District is a 15-minute walk north. For anything further — DIFC, Business Bay — take a taxi or Uber rather than walking in the heat.

Dubai Fountain timing

Shows run at 6:00pm, 6:30pm and then every 30 minutes until 11:00pm. The 6:00pm show catches the last of the golden-hour light with the fountain lit against a warm sky — and the 6:30pm show catches the transition to night. Both are worth seeing back-to-back. The boardwalk fills up fast from 5:45pm on weekends.

Insider tip: The fountain is visible and audible from many restaurants on the Souk Al Bahar terrace. Book a terrace table at any restaurant along the lake for a meal with the show as your backdrop — you'll see it 4–5 times during dinner without fighting the boardwalk crowds.
