Dubai Mall & The Dubai Fountain
DO · DOWNTOWN

Dubai Mall & The Dubai Fountain

The world's largest shopping mall by total area and the world's largest choreographed fountain — what to see, what to skip, and how to time your visit perfectly.

The fountain first — it's the main event

The Dubai Fountain is the world's largest choreographed fountain system — 275 metres long, capable of shooting water 150 metres into the air, set on the 30-hectare Burj Khalifa Lake. It performs to music ranging from Arabic classical to Andrea Bocelli to Bollywood, with 6,600 lights and 25 colour projectors turning the show into something genuinely theatrical after dark.

It is completely free. You don't need to enter the mall, book anything, or pay a dirham. Walk to the boardwalk around the lake and watch. The shows run every 30 minutes from 6pm to 11pm (and at 1pm and 1:30pm on Fridays and Saturdays). Allow 30–60 minutes to watch two consecutive shows — the second time you see it, you notice things you missed the first time.

The best viewing position is the boardwalk directly in front of the Souk Al Bahar bridge — slightly elevated, clear sightlines the full length of the fountain, and the Burj Khalifa in frame behind it. The JW Marriott Marquis side is also excellent. The Dubai Mall side itself is more crowded and has slightly obscured angles.

⭐ Best shows — full dark, full lighting effect
Best show time: The 6:30pm show gives you the transition from golden light to dark — the fountain in the last of the sunset light, then the city lights coming on around it. If you can only see one show, this is the one. In summer (May–Sep) adjust by ~90 minutes as sunset is later.

What's actually worth your time inside

⛷️
Dubai Ice Rink
From 90 AED · skate hire included
Olympic-sized ice rink on the ground floor. Skate hire included in the ticket. Surprisingly good fun — and surreally cold given the temperature outside. Popular with families and teenagers. Freestyle sessions run throughout the day; figure skating performances occasionally at weekends.
🎮
VR Park by Meraas
From 75 AED per experience
A large VR and gaming complex on Level 2 — experiences range from racing simulators to horror VR to a Burj Khalifa edge walk simulation. Pay per experience rather than flat entry. Good for 90-minute sessions. Better than it sounds; genuinely impressive technology in some exhibits.
🌊
Dubai Mall Waterfall
Free
A 24-metre indoor waterfall in the Fashion Avenue wing — four levels of cascading water with a human diver sculpture. One of the more dramatic interior design statements in the mall. Free to view. Look for the entrance near the Fashion Avenue bridge.

🛍️
Fashion Avenue

Getting there & making the most of it

Getting there

The Dubai Mall / Burj Khalifa Metro station (Red Line) connects via a 10-minute air-conditioned covered walkway. It's signposted well — follow "Dubai Mall" from the Metro exits. Taxis drop off at Gates 1, 3 and 4. Gate 1 is closest to the fountain boardwalk and Souk Al Bahar. Gate 3 is closest to the Fashion Avenue and Burj Khalifa entrance. Driving: paid parking is vast but fills on weekend evenings — arrive early or use Metro.

When to visit

Weekday afternoons (2–5pm) are the quietest. Weekend evenings (Friday 6–9pm especially) are extremely crowded — the fountain viewing areas are packed shoulder-to-shoulder. If you want a relaxed fountain experience on a Friday or Saturday, aim for the 6pm show before the evening rush builds, or go to the 10pm show when most families have left.

The Fountain Boat Tour

A small abra (traditional wooden boat) runs tours on the lake during fountain show times — you watch the show from the water, directly beneath the jets. Tickets from 99 AED. Boards from the Dubai Mall waterfront. A genuinely different perspective — you're inside the fountain rather than watching it from the side. Book on the day from the ticket booth near the boardwalk.

Combine efficiently: The optimal Downtown evening: Metro to Dubai Mall → aquarium panel → At the Top (pre-booked sunset slot) → descend → Fountain boardwalk for the 6:30pm show → dinner on the terrace for the 7:00pm and 7:30pm shows. This sequence covers three of Dubai's top-10 sights in a single evening without a taxi.
