How Dubai actually works for getting around
Dubai is a large, spread-out city built around the car. The main visitor areas — Downtown, Marina, Jumeirah, Palm, Old Dubai — are each excellent once you're in them, but the distances between them require transport. A taxi from Downtown to the Marina is 25–35 minutes and 45–70 AED. The Metro covers the same journey in 40 minutes for 7 AED. Understanding which option to use when saves meaningful time and money across a week's stay.
The practical reality: Metro for the main tourist corridor, taxis and Careem for Jumeirah and the Palm. The Metro Red Line runs the spine of the city and covers the airport, Downtown, Sheikh Zayed Road, and the Marina in one seamless route. Everything off this spine — Jumeirah Beach, Kite Beach, the Palm interior, Old Dubai souks, Al Quoz — requires a taxi or Careem. This combination works very well and neither mode is expensive by global standards.

Dubai Metro — Red & Green Lines
The best option for the main tourist corridor. Red Line runs airport → Downtown → Sheikh Zayed Road → Marina. Green Line covers Deira and Bur Dubai. Fully air-conditioned, reliable every 3–7 minutes. Women and children have a dedicated front carriage. Buy a Nol card (25 AED including 19 AED credit) — reusable across Metro, tram and buses.

Dubai Taxi (RTA — metered)
Official metered taxis — cream coloured with a roof light. Flag from taxi stands outside malls, hotels and Metro stations. Metered, reliable, honest. No surge pricing, no app required. Flag fall is 5 AED (12 AED from airport including airport surcharge). Drivers are generally excellent and know the city well. The most flexible option for areas the Metro doesn't reach.

Careem & Uber
Both apps work well in Dubai. Careem (owned by Uber) is the dominant local player. Set up the app and payment before arrival — useful for booking ahead, tracking your ride, and avoiding taxi rank queues. Prices are similar to or slightly above metered taxis. Surge pricing applies during peak times and bad weather. Particularly useful from the airport where the app pick-up zone is often faster than the taxi queue.

Dubai Tram
A surface tram running along Al Sufouh Road between Dubai Marina and the Palm Jumeirah monorail station. Connects DMCC Metro station to the Marina Walk, JBR, and the Palm monorail interchange. Useful for the last mile from the Metro to the waterfront. Same Nol card as the Metro. Runs every 8–10 minutes.

Palm Jumeirah Monorail
A monorail running the length of the Palm trunk from the Gateway (tram interchange) to Atlantis The Palm at the crescent. Four stations. The only public transport on the Palm itself. Good for getting from the tram/Metro to Atlantis without a taxi. Runs every 15–20 minutes. Connects to the Dubai Tram at the mainland end.

Abra (Traditional Creek Boat)
Wooden motorboats crossing Dubai Creek between Bur Dubai and Deira — unchanged for decades. Two routes: Bur Dubai Abra Station to Deira Gold Souk, and a slightly longer route to the Textile Souk. The most atmospheric transport in Dubai and one of the best experiences in the city. Pay the conductor in cash on board.

Dubai Ferry & Water Taxis (RTA)
RTA operates modern ferry services between Dubai Marina, Al Ghubaiba (near Old Dubai), and some Creek routes. The Dubai Ferry is a comfortable air-conditioned vessel — a scenic alternative to taxis for certain routes. The Marina to Al Ghubaiba route passes JBR, the Creek, and Old Dubai. Not the fastest but one of the most pleasant ways to see the waterfront.

Public Bus (RTA)
A comprehensive city bus network covers areas the Metro doesn't reach — including Jumeirah Beach Road, Al Quoz, and the souks. Buses are air-conditioned and use the Nol card. Useful for budget travel but routes and schedules require the RTA Dubai app to navigate. Less practical for most visitors than taxis or Careem for off-Metro destinations, but very cheap.

Self-Drive Car Rental
Practical for day trips to Hatta or Al Ain, and for families covering multiple areas. Driving in Dubai is straightforward — roads are well-signed in English, satnav works perfectly. Salik (toll) gates on Sheikh Zayed Road charge 4 AED per crossing — rental companies add a Salik card. Parking: free at most malls and hotels; paid zones in Downtown and Marina. Drink-driving: zero tolerance — never drive after alcohol.

§ 05 — The Nol Card
Everything you need to know about the Nol card
What it is
The Nol card is Dubai's contactless public transport card — used on the Metro, tram, buses, water buses, and some ferry routes. It replaces the need for per-journey tickets and makes moving around significantly easier. There are four types; visitors need the Red Nol Card (a standard stored-value card).
Getting one
Buy at any Metro station ticket machine or customer service desk. Cost: 25 AED total — 6 AED card fee + 19 AED initial credit. The card is reloadable at any Metro station. For a week's stay, 19 AED starting credit plus one or two top-ups of 20 AED will be sufficient for most visitors.
Using it
Tap in at the entry gate and tap out at the exit gate — the fare is deducted based on the zones you travel through. Minimum balance required to board: 7.5 AED. If your balance runs low the machine will warn you; top up before the balance hits zero to avoid being stranded at a gate.
At the end of your trip
Nol cards can be returned at any Metro customer service desk for a refund of the remaining credit (minus the 6 AED card fee). Alternatively, keep it for future visits — it's valid indefinitely as long as you've used it in the last 2 years.
App to download: The RTA Dubai app has live Metro timings, bus route planner, Nol card balance check, and journey planning. Download before you arrive and set your starting location. Careem and Uber also work seamlessly in Dubai — set up payment on either before landing to avoid fiddling with it at the airport.
