One dirham. Five minutes. The wooden boat crossing from Bur Dubai to Deira is unchanged for decades and one of the most atmospheric things in the city. Pay in cash at the station. Take in the Creek — dhows at anchor, the old warehouses, the water birds.
This is genuinely one of the best 1 AED you will spend.

Walk through both souks before the midday heat. The Gold Souk arcade is remarkable for scale alone — 300 shops of jewellery and precious stones. The Spice Souk next door smells of saffron, dried lime and frankincense. You don't need to buy anything. Allow 45 minutes total.

Take a taxi from Deira to Downtown Dubai (20–30 min, 25–40 AED). This is a good time to move — you avoid the peak midday heat outside and arrive in Downtown ready for lunch. The drive down Sheikh Zayed Road through the skyscraper corridor is a moment in itself.

Souk Al Bahar sits opposite the Burj Khalifa across the lake. The terrace restaurants (Wafi Gourmet, Jones the Grocer) have the best Fountain and Burj views of any lunch spot in Downtown. You'll see the first Fountain show of the evening from your table later. Allow 90 minutes.

Dubai Mall — aquarium & walk

Walk through the Dubai Mall. The aquarium ground-floor panel is free — 10 metres of sharks, rays and 140 species behind the world's largest acrylic panel. The indoor waterfall at the Fashion Avenue end is worth seeing. Don't feel obliged to shop. Use this air-conditioned time to rest before the evening.
The aquarium walk-through tunnel costs 140 AED — skip if budget is tight, the free panel is impressive enough.

Burj Khalifa At the Top

This is the centrepiece of the day. You should have booked the slot 30 minutes before today's sunset time when you planned this trip — sunset tickets sell out 2–3 weeks ahead. Take the lift (60 seconds to level 124), reach the outdoor terrace at level 125 as golden hour begins. Watch the city turn amber-orange. Stay as the city lights come on. Allow 90 minutes.

Dubai Fountain — first show

The 6:00pm show is the first evening show. Walk down from the Burj Khalifa entrance to the Fountain boardwalk. The combination of the music, water and the building you just descended from is extraordinary. Stay for the 6:30pm show too — it's the same music lineup but you'll want to see it twice. Free. No booking required. Just be there.

Dinner on the Fountain boardwalk

Book a terrace table at any restaurant along the Fountain boardwalk for dinner — Thiptara (Thai, excellent), Rivington Grill, or the simpler Wafi Gourmet. The Fountain show runs every 30 minutes until 11pm — you'll watch it 3–4 times during dinner. The most spectacular free dinner show in the world.

Marina → Palm → Sundowner

Marina Walk — early morning

Take the Metro Red Line to DMCC station and walk to the Marina Walk. At 8am the promenade is quiet — joggers and residents, boats in the water, towers reflected in the still canal. The best version of the Marina. Stop for coffee at one of the waterfront cafés. Allow 1 hour.
The Lime Tree Café and Cayan Cantina are both good morning options along the Walk.

JBR Beach

Walk west from the Marina to JBR Beach — 10 minutes on foot. Arrive before 10:30am when it starts to fill. The morning light on the water is at its best before noon. Swim, walk the shoreline, watch the city wake up from the sand. The calm water and clear sky on a good morning are one of Dubai's genuine pleasures.

Palm Jumeirah — The Pointe

Take a taxi from JBR to The Pointe on the Palm Jumeirah crescent (15 min, 30–40 AED). The Pointe is an outdoor dining and retail strip on the east side of the crescent with views back across the water to the Dubai skyline. Walk the waterfront, get a fresh juice, take in the scale of the island from ground level.

Lunch at Atlantis — Seafire or Nobu

At Atlantis The Palm, both the Seafire Steakhouse and Nobu are open for lunch. Nobu is the classic choice — black cod miso, yellowtail jalapeño, the unmistakable dining room. This is the splurge meal of the trip if you're going for it. Alternatively, The Pointe has mid-range options if budget is a priority.
Book Nobu at least 3 days ahead even for weekday lunch.

Palm Monorail → Atlantis views

Take the Palm Monorail from the crescent back toward the trunk. The aerial view from the monorail across the Palm fronds is one of the best free views of the island's extraordinary shape. Exit at the Atlantis end to walk around the crescent hotel (even as a non-guest the pool and lobby areas are impressive at a glance).

Kite Beach — Burj Al Arab view

Taxi from Palm to Kite Beach (20 min, 35–50 AED). This is Dubai's best free beach — and the Burj Al Arab stands 500 metres offshore in your eyeline. The late afternoon light on the hotel's sail shape, with the Gulf behind it, is one of the great Dubai views and it costs nothing. Food trucks on site for a snack.

Sundowner — Folly or Skyview Bar

Two options from Kite Beach: (1) Walk 15 minutes to Folly by Nick & Scott at Souk Madinat Jumeirah — outdoor terrace, Burj Al Arab across the water, no minimum spend, great cocktails. (2) If budget allows, book Skyview Bar at the Burj Al Arab itself — 200m up inside the sail, minimum spend ~400 AED per person. Both are extraordinary at sunset.
Folly is the better value option; Skyview is the bucket-list one. Book Skyview Bar at least a week ahead.

Options: stay in Jumeirah for dinner at Souk Madinat (Pai Thai, Bubbalicious on Fridays) or return to Downtown via taxi (35 min) for one final dinner overlooking the Fountain. Bu Qtair at the Jumeirah waterfront — legendary fresh fish, no atmosphere, perfect food — is a Dubai institution worth seeking out for the last meal.
