Hatta — Dubai's mountain enclave
Hatta is a small exclave of Dubai — a piece of the emirate separated from the main city, about 100km east, tucked into the Hajar Mountains on the border with Oman. It takes 1–1.5 hours to drive there from Downtown Dubai. The landscape is a complete contrast to the coast: granite peaks, rocky wadis (dried riverbeds that fill with flash floods after rain), date palm oases and a heritage village that predates the UAE by centuries.
For Dubai visitors, Hatta represents the answer to a question many people don't know to ask: is there anything beyond the malls and skyscrapers? The answer is yes, and it's extraordinary. The Hatta Dam — a turquoise reservoir surrounded by mountains — is one of the most beautiful views in the UAE. The mountain biking trails are among the best in the Middle East. The Hatta Heritage Village preserves the mud-brick architecture and artefacts of a way of life that existed long before oil. A full day here resets your sense of what the UAE actually is.
Best season: October to April. May to September the mountains are also hot (though 5–8°C cooler than Dubai) and activities are still possible in the early morning. The landscape after rare winter rains — green shoots on the rocks, occasional waterfalls in the wadis — is spectacular.

Kayaking on Hatta Dam
The dam's turquoise water against the grey granite mountains is one of the most photogenic scenes in the UAE. Kayak, pedal boat and paddleboard rentals are available from the Hatta Wadi Hub on the shoreline. No experience required. The 1-hour kayak is the sweet spot — enough time to paddle to the far end and back, enjoying the mountain reflections and the absolute silence.

Mountain biking trails
Hatta has the best mountain biking in the UAE — a network of 30+ km of trails across difficulty grades, carved through the mountain landscape with dramatic views throughout. Bike rental is available at the Hatta Wadi Hub from 60 AED/hour. The easier green trails suit casual riders; the red and black trails are technical and rewarding. A guide is useful for the first visit to pick the right route.

Hatta Heritage Village
A restored Emirati settlement of mud-brick houses, watchtowers and a traditional falaj (irrigation channel) system dating back 3,000 years. The village was abandoned in the 1970s when residents moved to modern housing — it was then preserved as a heritage site. Free entry. The mountain backdrop is extraordinary. Allow 45–60 minutes. Combine with the dam — they're 5 minutes apart by car.

Zipline over the dam
A twin zipline running 300m across the Hatta Dam — launching from above the waterline and descending toward the far shore. The views across the dam during the crossing are spectacular. One of the few ziplines in the world where you fly over a mountain reservoir. Operated by the Hatta Wadi Hub; book online or at the hub on arrival.

Wadi walks & rock pools
The wadis (dry mountain valleys) around Hatta offer some of the best easy walking in the UAE — flat, dramatic, completely free. After rains (November–February mainly) natural rock pools form in the wadis. Wadi Khaddar and Wadi Hatta are the most accessible. Sturdy shoes recommended; the rocky terrain is uneven. Start early to beat the heat even in winter.
§ 03 — Sample day itinerary
A perfect Hatta day from Dubai
7:30am
Leave Dubai. Beat the heat and the weekend crowds. The E44 road from Al Ain Road is straightforward — Google Maps or Waze routes you directly. Fuel up before leaving Dubai; petrol stations in Hatta are limited.
8:45am
Arrive at Hatta Dam. The drive down into the dam from the E44 is one of the most dramatic road approaches in the UAE — mountains framing the turquoise water below. The dam parking area is free. Walk the shoreline before the activity crowds arrive.
9:15am
Kayaking on the dam. Rent a kayak (or pedal boat) from the Wadi Hub for 1 hour. Paddle to the far end — the mountain reflections are clearest in morning light. The silence is extraordinary compared to the city you left 90 minutes ago.
10:30am
Hatta Heritage Village. 5 minutes by car from the dam. Walk the mud-brick lanes, visit the old fort and watchtowers, look out over the mountains. The small museum inside the fort has good context on pre-oil Hatta life. Allow 1 hour.
12:00pm
Lunch. The Hatta Wadi Hub has a café and restaurant with mountain views — good sandwiches and light meals, reasonably priced. Or bring a picnic — the dam picnic area is excellent.
1:30pm
Mountain biking or zipline. If you bike, the green trails from the Wadi Hub give 1.5–2 hours of riding with great views and manageable terrain. If you prefer the zipline, book a 2pm slot while at lunch and cross the dam from above.
3:30pm
Wadi walk. A gentle 45-minute walk through the Hatta wadi — flat, rocky, dramatic. The late-afternoon light on the granite is excellent for photography. Cool enough in winter and spring; skip in summer.
5:00pm
Drive back to Dubai. The E44 back is straightforward. You'll be back in Downtown for dinner — the contrast between the mountain silence and the Dubai Marina lights will be striking. The drive takes 75–90 minutes.
§ 04 — Getting there
How to get to Hatta
By car (recommended)
The only practical way to explore Hatta fully is by car. Take Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road (E311) east, then join the Al Ain Road (E66), then turn onto the E44 (Hatta Road). Google Maps navigation to "Hatta Dam" or "Hatta Wadi Hub" is accurate and straightforward. The road crosses briefly through Omani territory — no passport check required, but do not stop or turn off in the Omani section.
Car rental from Dubai
Car rental from Dubai International or Downtown is easy and affordable — budget AED 150–250/day for a standard car. Most rental companies allow driving into Hatta (it's still UAE territory). Confirm your rental agreement permits the Omani road section if you're concerned.
Organised day tours
Several operators run Hatta day tours from Dubai — typically including guided wadi walking, dam access and the heritage village, with hotel pick-up and drop-off. Prices range from 250–450 AED per person. Less flexible than self-driving but useful if you don't want to rent a car.
Staying overnight
The Hatta Resorts by Emaar (glamping tents and mountain villas) and the Sedr Trailers Resort are the main overnight options. Both are excellent — staying overnight allows you to see the starry sky over the mountains and have the dam entirely to yourself at dawn. A two-day visit doubles the experience.
Oman crossing note: The Hatta Road (E44) passes through a 30km section of Omani territory. There are no passport checks at the crossing points for UAE residents and visitors — you pass through freely. Do not stop or leave the road in the Omani section. You must have comprehensive car insurance that covers Oman — standard UAE rental policies usually include this, but confirm before departure.
