Dubai Marina — what it's like

Dubai Marina is a 3km artificial canal dug out of the desert and lined with 200+ residential towers. Completed between 2003 and 2010, it was one of the world's largest construction projects of its decade. Today it's a fully functioning neighbourhood — home to over 120,000 residents — with a genuine street life that most of Dubai's constructed districts never quite achieve.

The Marina Walk is the promenade circling the canal — 3.5km of waterfront restaurants, cafes, yacht berths and people. In the mornings it's joggers and dog walkers; in the evenings it's dining crowds and strolling couples. It's one of the most genuinely pleasant outdoor spaces in the city and is best in the hour before sunset.

JBR (Jumeirah Beach Residence) sits immediately west — a strip of towers backing onto the Arabian Gulf with direct beach access. The Beach at JBR is a well-designed retail and food truck strip fronting the sand. Free entry to the beach itself. The water is calm, clean and swimmable October–May.

JBR's The Walk and the Marina towers have Dubai's most accessible bar and club scene outside DIFC.

Best time to visit the Marina Walk: 6pm–9pm on any evening in peak season (Nov–Mar). The light is golden, the temperature is perfect, and the waterfront restaurants are setting up for the evening rush. Arrive early to get a table with a view.
