Dubai as a family destination
Dubai is, perhaps surprisingly, one of the world's great family travel destinations. The reasons are structural rather than accidental: the city's enormous indoor infrastructure (built for summer heat) means there are world-class activities for every age group regardless of weather. The safety record is exceptional — Dubai consistently ranks among the world's safest cities. The hotel infrastructure explicitly caters for families. And the sheer variety of what's available — waterparks, aquariums, desert safaris, indoor ski slopes, beaches — means there's something for every age and interest across a week's stay.
The challenges are also real: the heat from May to September makes outdoor activities difficult for young children; the city's scale requires a lot of taxi travel; and the all-you-can-eat luxury of some attractions comes with prices to match. This guide addresses both the opportunities and the practical realities honestly.
Best age for Dubai: Children aged 5–15 tend to get the most from Dubai. Under 5s can have a wonderful time with the right hotel choice but require more careful planning around heat, routine, and distances. Teenagers often find Dubai genuinely exciting — the skydiving, desert adventures and urban scale appeal directly to that age group.

Making Dubai work with children
Heat management
The golden rule with children in Dubai from May to September: outdoors before 9am or after 6pm only. In these months, the midday heat (40°C+) is dangerous for young children and genuinely uncomfortable for all ages. Structure days around this: early beach morning, indoor afternoon, outdoor evening. November to March this constraint largely disappears — the weather is perfect for children outdoors at any time of day.
Travel distances
Dubai is large and spread out. The distance from Downtown to the Palm is 35 minutes by taxi. Plan your days geographically — don't bounce between areas. A day on the Palm stays on the Palm. A day in Downtown stays in Downtown. This reduces taxi travel, reduces pram/buggy hauling, and reduces tired-children situations significantly.
Prams and buggies
Dubai is very pram-friendly in modern areas — all malls have lifts and smooth floors, Metro stations have lifts, pavements in tourist areas are wide and flat. Old Dubai (Deira souks, Al Fahidi lanes) is less pram-friendly — cobblestones and narrow passages. Consider a carrier for any souk visits with under-3s.
Food with children
Dubai is an extremely family-friendly dining city — children's menus are near-universal in restaurants, high chairs are always available in malls, and the range of cuisines means fussy eaters can usually find something. All malls have food courts with familiar international options (McDonald's, Pizza Hut etc.) if needed. Hotel buffet breakfasts are reliably good for children.
Medical
Dubai has excellent medical facilities — private hospitals and clinics are world-class. Travel insurance is essential (as always) and ensure it covers children comprehensively. Common issues: dehydration and sunburn (preventable with the obvious measures), and stomach upsets from trying new foods. Pharmacies are extremely well-stocked throughout the city — paracetamol, rehydration sachets, sunscreen all available cheaply.
