Al Quoz — Dubai's art district
Al Quoz is an industrial district sandwiched between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Wasl Road — warehouses, workshops and light industry. It shouldn't work as a cultural destination, but it does. Alserkal Avenue, a converted complex of around 50,000 sqm of warehouse space, is now home to over 60 creative businesses: contemporary art galleries, a cinema, a theatre, design studios, recording spaces, specialty coffee roasters and independent shops.
The galleries here are serious — not hotel lobby art. The Third Line, Carbon 12, Leila Heller Gallery and Lawrie Shabibi show internationally significant contemporary and Arab artists, with programming on par with galleries in London, New York or Berlin. Entry is free. The standard is genuinely high.
Cinema Akil is the only dedicated arthouse cinema in Dubai — showing independent and international films that don't make it to the mall multiplexes. It's a small, serious venue with a committed audience. Check the programme at cinemaakil.com before visiting.

Thursday evening is when new gallery exhibitions open — free drinks, artists present, the creative community out. The best version of Alserkal.
Getting here: There's no Metro stop — take a taxi or Uber to "Alserkal Avenue, Al Quoz, Dubai". Most gallery apps and mapping tools find it correctly. Parking is available on-site if you're driving. About 15 minutes from Downtown, 20 from the Marina.
